What is a billing start date?

The difference between the billing start date and the first statement date.

A billing start date is required when enrolling a resident and is typically in line with the resident's lease start date. The date input will be the starting day the resident is responsible for paying for all utility usage.

If a utility charge overlaps with the billing start date, the resident will be responsible for the number of days included in the service period.

The first statement date will be on the 1st of the following month or on the 15th of the following month if you are integrated with a property management software.

Here is an example:

  • Resident billing start date: 3/15/2024
    • This date was initiated upon a new lease signing, where a utility addendum was included to notify the resident of responsibility for paying for their utility usage through Livable Pro.
  • Utility bill: Water charges for the 3/1-3/31/2024 service period were entered during the April 2024 cycle.
  • In this example, the resident would be allocated a fair portion of the Water utility bill for the dates 3/15-3/31/2024. They would not be responsible for the portion of the bill prior to their billing start date, 3/15/2024.
  • The resident's April 2024 statement will be sent to them on May 1st, including the associated charges for the days after their billing start date.
  • If this account is integrated into a property management software, the statements would instead be sent on May 15th, and the resident would pay their utility charges alongside their rent through the property management software.

Note: You will be responsible for entering your billing start dates when enrolling residents. For assistance with Enrolling Residents, refer to our "Enrolling a Resident" Help Center article. If you are integrated with a property management software, though you will not need to enter most resident information, you will still need to enter the billing start for each resident.
